Session Name: a+b=c: Why Improving Math Scores is Easier Than You Think

Session Description:
Are schools asking the wrong question about how to teach math? A decade of stagnation in math achievement has forced a deeper look into the nationwide debate between advocates of direct instruction and inquiry-based learning, but the latest research shows that both sides are missing the point. Both are important. The right question is “when should each be used?” not “which is best?”. This session equips superintendents with the latest insights into how students learn math and how to design interventions that close persistent learning gaps, featuring real examples from districts that unlocked progress by asking the right question. Participants will leave equipped to unite those with differing views on math instruction around a shared vision for accelerating student progress at scale.

Session Description:
As schools try to move forward during times of societal challenges and pressure, they need one resource more than ever: engaged, effective teachers. But recent surveys show that 7 in 10 teachers are suffering from low morale and don’t feel able to bring their best work to the classroom. Raising teacher morale is likely at the top of every district’s agenda in 2022. District 200 and District 99 are each on a path to define and address teacher morale with the help of EAB researchers define and unlock what truly moves the needle on employee morale. This session will share the multiple year journeys these Districts are on to address morale in their Districts with a goal of retaining teachers and improving their efficacy.
