Central office staffing has grown by 77% nationwide, largely in response to the drastic increase in what public schools are asked to accomplish. However, because that growth has been slow and piecemeal, district administrators are still stretched thin and struggling with the scope of their mandate. As a result, superintendents in every state are asking how to upgrade their central office structure and practice to support greater sustainability, efficiency, and results.

EAB and AASA hosted a webinar to share our latest research on how districts are updating leadership team roles and practices to achieve new levels of organizational excellence. Our analysis of organization charts and interviews with leaders in dozens of school systems uncovered five requirements for an efficient, aligned central office that can support today’s complex schools.
