2025 State of the Sector: Unpacking the Crisis of Public Confidence in Higher Ed

Colleges and universities face no shortage of challenges, from election-year polarization and critiques from both sides of the aisle to a growing skepticism about higher ed’s relevance and value.

In EAB’s annual State of the Sector address, EAB’s Vice President of Research, Carla Hickman, explores the growing disconnect between the broader public and higher ed and digs into the underlying drivers of stakeholder perceptions, along with the evolving expectations of prospective students and parents, employers, donors, and policymakers.

Questions tackled include:
  • How institutions can balance the needs and demands of internal constituents with increasingly loud calls for change from external constituents?
  • Why there are competing and sometimes conflicting calls for more affordable and career-relevant education?
  • How institutions can reclaim the public good mantle as they pursue social mobility and economic impact?
  • And how we can mount more compelling defenses of our value proposition that transcend the higher ed echo chamber?

The address will be followed by a moderated panel of experts to share reactions on how higher education can and must respond.
